Foreclosure prevented helping widowed senior remain in her home

After losing her husband of 60 years, Tommy Hewell found herself in foreclosure. His passing dramatically reduced her income. In addition, she was facing her own variety of health issues which required daily visits from a home health care aid. She was working with Jacksonville Legal Aid and they referred her to St. Johns Housing Partnership with the hope of being able to secure a loan modification. The two agencies were able to stop the foreclosure and secure the modification, thereby keeping Mrs. Hewell in the home that she and her husband shared for thirty-four years.

Of those clients SJHP served in 2019 for foreclosure prevention, 43% were over the age of 60 with 55% being households headed by women. There are many in our community like Mrs. Hewell in need of help. Reduced funding has decreased those we can help but with the support of donors we can continue to provide this much needed service to keep families in their homes.
